Putting All Of This ?Fanboy/Fangirl? Nonsense To Rest Once And For ...

There?s an interesting thing that happens in the technology press world, and probably throughout all of journalism land. It?s weird, and it?s become quite annoying to me. Basically, whenever someone writes something positive about a company, be it a product release or software update, the general public tends to jump to a conclusion quickly ? that the person writing the story is either a fanboy/fangirl of the company, or is in the ?pocket? of the PR team at said company.

It?s obnoxious. The sad part about it is that this behavior of simple-mindedness is starting to cross over into the journalism ecosystem itself. Other journalists at other publications are starting to call out people for ?drinking Kool-aid? or being an ?apologist.?

Even though this is very annoying and counterproductive, the sadder part is that it?s so far from the truth that it?s not even funny. For whatever reason, whether you agree with it or not, we are paid to write about technology. For the most part, we call it like we see it. At least I know I do, and can?t speak for others. Oh, and we don?t get paid by companies to write things. Ever. We?re not stupid.

My experience in Silicon Valley is a bit different than other journalists? experiences because I?ve actually worked at startups and have had a few of my own projects. I know how all of this works, and trust me, it?s work. Launching something, reaching out to the press and supporting your users is tireless work, but that?s what we get paid to do at startups.

For journalists? We?re people too. We like certain products and companies. We get called out for having a bias toward something. Well, duh. We?re human and we like what we like and we don?t like what we don?t like. It?s life and more importantly, it?s completely healthy.

Example time

So if you?re oblivious to all of this and don?t know what I?m talking about, I?ll give you a few examples. The best one that I can think of is any journalist that covers Apple heavily. Some journalists get called out for being in their ?back pocket.? Not only is that not true, but it?s quite hurtful and questions our integrity. Should we fight back? No. Sometimes we have to, though.

Another example is a journalist at a publication that covers Facebook heavily. It?s their beat, they are very interested in what Facebook is up to. Sometimes, when the company screws up, they call them out on it. Like a journalist should. But sometimes, they get really excited to tell you, the readers, that Facebook has done something quite awesome and revolutionary. As they should.

In my experience, I get called out repeatedly for covering a company that isn?t Apple. For what reason? I have no idea, other than they?re not ?sexy enough? in Silicon Valley. The heart of the matter is that all of these companies are made up of people who work very hard to create things that change your lives and in some cases, change the world.

It?s really awesome and inspiring stuff. What?s even awesomer is that we have the job to tell you all about it.

Don?t get me wrong

I love commenters and readers, so don?t get me wrong here. I love feedback and criticism. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. That?s why the world and the Internet are great. However, lay off on attacking integrity unless you have evidence that this is really the case.

I?m not afraid to tell you that this is annoying or obnoxious, because I have no shits to give. I will not apologize for enjoying things that a company does and thus enjoying telling you about it. You can hate it. I hope that people do sometimes, because if you agree with one person all of the time, something is very wrong.

I?m a fan of Apple products, but?I hate iOS 6 Maps?and have said as much. I don?t like everything that Google does. In fact,?some of their moves baffle me, but some of them are?quite fantastic. It?s life.

Having said all of this, I just wanted to level with folks on how this all really works. We?re all very lucky to be able to find information quickly and read great publications for free. We don?t have to like what we read. We don?t have to like who wrote it. We don?t have to like who it is about. But you do have to know that we?re all people.

Just because we?re behind a computer doesn?t mean we get a free pass to be an ass. Rock on and feel free to bash me in the comments.

Romney woos Florida early vote; Obama eyes N.H.

LAND O'LAKES, Fla. (AP) ? Juggling politics and storm preparations, Mitt Romney dangled a plea for bipartisanship before early voters in Florida on Saturday as Barack Obama worked to nail down tiny New Hampshire's four electoral votes. Both campaigns scrambled to steer clear of a most unlikely October surprise, a superstorm barreling up the East Coast.

With just 10 days left in an extraordinarily tight race, Hurricane Sandy had both campaigns ripping up carefully mapped-out itineraries as they worked to maximize voter turnout and avoid any suggestion that they were putting politics ahead of public safety.

The campaigns pressed every possible angle in search of advantage ? even paying attention to punctuation.

Obama's campaign signs for months have said: "Forward." Now they say: "Forward!"

Romney, who has been striking a more moderate tone as he courts women and independents in the campaign's home stretch, campaigned across Florida with a pledge to "build bridges" with the other party.

He coupled that message with digs at Obama for "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" and advancing an agenda that lacks vision. Noting that Obama supporters like to chant "four more years" at the president's campaign rallies, Romney picked up on his crowd's own chant at the Pensacola Civic Center and said: "I like '10 more days' a lot better."

His warm-up act was more biting: Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told the crowd that Obama was advancing "the ideas of countries that people come here to get away from." Pressed later on what countries he was referring to, Rubio said, "any big-government country in the world" and specifically referred to Mexico and Latin America.

Obama hauled his campaign to New Hampshire, where he told volunteers at a Teamsters hall in Manchester that: "We don't know how this thing is going to play out. These four electoral voters right here could make all the difference."

It takes 270 electoral votes to win the election. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. The rest lie in nine contested states that are too close to call, New Hampshire among them.

The president adjusted his campaign speech at a Nashua rally to appeal to voters in low-tax New Hampshire, hammering Romney for raising taxes and fees as governor of neighboring Massachusetts.

Obama accused Romney of running in Massachusetts on a pledge to lower taxes, then making life more expensive for the middle class after taking office.

"All he's offering is a big rerun of the same policies," Obama told a crowd of 8,500 gathered at an outdoor rally on an unseasonably warm October day.

The president said Romney even raised fees in Massachusetts on obtaining a birth certificate, "which would have been expensive for me." It was a veiled reference to opponents of the president who have incorrectly said he was born outside the United States. Copies of his birth certificate have been in high demand.

The candidates worked to lock down every possible early vote without intruding on emergency preparations as the storm's expected track looked to affect at least four battleground states: North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire.

Romney scrapped plans to campaign in Virginia on Sunday, and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. At a rally in Kissimee, Fla., he urged supporters to keep those in the storm's path "in your mind and in your hearts."

"You know how tough hurricanes can be," he told the Floridians.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., to allow local officials there to focus on disaster preparedness and local security concerns.

But he went ahead with an appearance in Lynchburg, which is inland. Biden said Romney and Ryan are fleeing from their record to appear more moderate than they are. They "are counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia."

Plans for son Beau Biden, the Delaware attorney general, to join his father in Virginia were scrapped when he was called up by the National Guard to help with the storm.

Obama canceled Monday appearances in Prince William County, Virginia on Monday, and Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday so he could monitor Hurricane Sandy as it moves ashore. He did move up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm and planned a Monday stop in Youngstown, Ohio, before returning to the White House.

En route to New Hampshire, Obama held an airborne conference call with administration officials about the federal government's role in minimizing storm damage and a ensuring speedy recovery effort.

Campaign spokesman Jennifer Psaki said the Obama team was continuing to promote early voting as something that provides flexibility for busy families, but she added that with the storm headed for shore, "safety comes first, and that's the case with early voting as well."

Romney's trip to Florida, with three events across the state, was timed to coincide with the first day of in-person early voting in a state that went for Obama four years ago and where 29 electoral votes are up for grabs this time. Both campaigns already have been working furiously to gain the advantage in the state's vote-by-mail program, an area where Republicans typically have been stronger.

"I need you to vote early!" Romney told supporters in Land O'Lakes.

Republican Rep. Paul Ryan worked his way across rainy, chilly Ohio, on a two-day bus trip, with his family in tow. At a factory in New Philadelphia, Ryan stressed the hit that manufacturing industries have taken over the last four years and promised more coal jobs, natural gas jobs and increased military spending if Romney is elected.

Speaking to more than 1,000 supporters on the factory floor at Gradall Industries, Ryan told voters: "You know it's you. You know what you have in front of you. You know your responsibility."

Campaign 2012 was serious business, with so little time left and the storm complicating the end game, but Ryan's children helped to lighten the tone. His 7-, 9- and 10-year-olds scampered between parts bins and heavy chains at the factory.

Nine-year-old Charlie waved the peace sign and mugged for cameras, prompting his mother, Janna Ryan, to shake her head and declare, "I don't know where he gets it. It's kind of crazy."

During a later stop at a bakery in Circleville, Ohio, 10-year-old daughter Liz told the bakery clerk that her dad was "sugar-free except for doughnuts and ice cream."

"And apple-fritters," Ryan agreed.

Obama, for his part, made a stop at the Common Man Merrimack, a restaurant where he toasted patrons with a Common Man Ale, saying: "To voting. To America. Doesn't matter what party."

The campaigns and their allies kept up a steady stream of TV and radio ads in the battleground states. The right-leaning Americans for Job Security made a rare purchase of Philadelphia airtime, amounting to $1.2 million, for pro-Romney ads. While a few independent groups have tried to make Pennsylvania competitive for Romney, neither Obama nor Romney has devoted ad resources to the state, which is expected to go for Obama.

From predators to hit man for NBC's Hansen

(AP) ? NBC News' Chris Hansen has done his share of hidden camera work, most notably confronting would-be child predators. Even for him, meeting a man willing to carry out a hit was a chilling experience.

Hansen is shown negotiating with a hit man during a "Dateline NBC" special Friday exploring some of the strange and dangerous business being carried out online on sites like Craig's List and others. He also meets a man looking to sell his marijuana delivery business, a woman advertising her willingness to sell her kidney and another woman seeking to buy a kidney.

Drugs like OxyContin and Vicodin are available online, he said, and many young people are becoming dependent and then turning to heroin as a cheaper alternative.

"It's an eye-opening look at society because so much is going on on these web sites," he said.

"Dateline NBC" didn't even get in to the issue of sex trafficking online. Hansen said there's enough material to make Friday's special, "Wild, Wild Web," a regular feature.

Even Hansen wasn't quite prepared for the experience of meeting a man who advertised his willingness to complete "jobs done discreetly." When Hansen mentioned that there was someone he had a problem with, his potential partner noted that he could arrange to have a leg broken, to send someone to the hospital or guarantee that they could "disappear."

When they sat down for a meeting in New York's Bryant Park, captured on hidden cameras, the hit man's eyes constantly scanned for someone suspicious. The man had suggested walking around and then meeting in a federal office building, knowing that metal detectors would reveal if Hansen was an undercover police officer wired with a recorder to make an arrest.

Hansen wasn't working for the police, but he was wired. If he didn't talk the man into sitting down in the park, the story would have been ruined.

After a half hour of talking, Hansen revealed he was a journalist working on a story. The man, indignant, said that the NBC crew hadn't caught him doing anything criminal.

"I'm not a lawyer," Hansen said. "My sense of it is they have to prove intent. Will police look him up and pay him a visit? Quite possibly."

They parted ways. Just to be safe, NBC producers quietly followed the man to a subway where he left the scene.

In another park, Hansen met with a man willing to sell the list of customers from his marijuana business. Before Hansen identified himself, the man said, "You look like that guy from the child molester show."

Well, yes. Hansen's NBC identity is sealed as the host of "Dateline's" long-running "To Catch a Predator" series, a sting operation for men convinced they've found an underage girl online who wants sex. NBC no longer runs the series, but reruns with updates occasionally air on MSNBC. NBC drew ethical questions for its role in setting up these confrontations and some critics suggested the network was using humiliation for entertainment.

Hansen knows it is the work he'll be remembered for most at NBC. In some situations, it's an advantage. Hansen said he's run into law enforcement officials who recognize him and give him access beyond what his competitors get.

"I know what you're getting at," he said. "Clearly when there is a character based on you on 'South Park' or 'The Simpsons,' that is something that sticks with you for the rest of your career. But I'm fine with that."

Today?s Nintendo Direct broadcast has shed some light on some additional details for the Wii U and 3DS versions of Monster Hunter Tri, named Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

The Monster Hunter franchise is definitely one of the most successful Capcom productions of the generation with 3 mainline games available on Psp and Wii, an online only spin off called Monster Hunter Frontier online, a fourth mainline game being developed for 3DS and a few Psp spin offs
The series premises are simple yet addicting: as the name suggests, players will become monster hunters, exploring the vast wilderness and fighting gigantic beasts and monsters. What makes the Monster Hunter games so much fun is the way monsters have to be defeated: each monster has a specific weak point players must find out before hoping to have a chance to defeat them. Button mashing won?t get you far in the Monster Hunter games. Each monster has its own weapon and elemental weaknesses too and hunters must be really prepared before each hunt. Once defeated players will collect materials from the dead monster body and use them to make more powerful weapons and armors. Multiplayer mode allows hunters to join together their efforts and it?s definitely one of the series gameplay?s highlights.

The third game of the series, dubbed Monster Hunter Tri, was first released on Nintendo Wii on 2009 to critical and commercial success.
The game was ported last year on 3DS as Monster Hunter Tri G with some added content and general gameplay tweakings.
The Wii U and 3DS versions will be released in the west as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate: today?s Nintendo Direct confirmed that the game?s online multiplayer mode will be free.
Four players will be able to join the hunts together; local multiplayer between the Wii U version and the 3DS one was also confermed.
The good news don?t stop here since all post release DLC of the 3DS version will be included in the WII U version.
Hunters will also be able to choose their ?weapons? outside the game as the Wii U version will be compatible with both the Gamepad and the Pro Controller: the Gamepad will offer some advantages in quick access to inventory and in-game maps.

On a related note, Nintendo Europe announced today that they will be taking care of distribution for the European and Australian markets.

Get your weapons ready hunters: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will launch in the West in March 2013.

Student Loans: Speculate To Accumulate - Personal Finance 4 All

The amount students are paying for university now is in the realms of outrageous, as student fees have gone up threefold within the last couple of years.

In fact, the estimated amount any average student should expect to pay for their fees, maintenance loan and living expenses is around ?50,000 to ?60,000.

The government have capped the amount public universities can charge for their courses to ?9000 a year which is still an astounding amount given that four or five years ago the capped amount was only a third of that.
Obviously the majority of English universities jumped at the chance of charging their students the absolute maximum for their higher education meaning there will be a generation of students in levels of unprecedented debt before they even step in to working life.

Obviously no student will have to pay their fees upfront; the Student Loans Company pays the fees straight to the university and you will only have to start paying them back once you have started working in a professional role.
A student loan is probably the best loan you will ever receive in your life as you are only paying around 9% on the whole amount. You will also never be hounded for the debts and your repayments only start when you are earning in excess of ?21,000 a year. You don?t even have to set up your payments; they will come directly from your wage using your National Insurance information. If you ever lose your job or find yourself earning lower than the amount, your re-payments will stop.

You should look at the money you pay for your university as an investment in yourself which is all the more reason to get the most out of the time you have in an institute of higher learning.
Mike writes for UK-Essay.net, a company providing advice for students and sound essay writing services to those studying at university.

Rewards programs: When do consumers compare experience over value?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Consumers are often less satisfied when they buy or receive products that are easily counted because this makes them focus on value instead of experience, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

"Numbers make us feel more certain of what is in front of us. When we count, we understand exactly how big, expensive, heavy, or old something is. But when we buy or receive products that are easily counted, we may be less satisfied," write authors Jingjing Ma and Neal J. Roese (both Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University).

What happens when consumers are compensated with gifts such as a toaster or a winter coat instead of cash? If two consumers receive the same dollar value, it shouldn't matter if it comes in the form of gifts or cash. But it does matter.

In one study, the authors rewarded consumers with either cash or slices of cake. Predictably, consumers who received more cash were happy with the outcome while those getting less cash were upset. But whether people received more or less cake didn't affect their satisfaction nearly as much. Because the cake slices were less easily counted, people were just as happy with less as with more. When consumers received a slice of cake, they were more likely to focus on how delicious their cake is and ignore how much cake others received.

Another study showed that when people miss out on a deal, they are more upset when that deal was countable (buy one, get one free) rather than uncountable (get a larger bottle at the regular price). This suggests that programs offering rewards that can be easily counted such as airline frequent flyer miles may be less satisfying to consumers than less easily counted reward programs such as those offering free products or vacation packages.

"Countability drives comparisons. When rewards are easily counted, people are more likely to compare themselves with others. But when rewards are less easily counted, people focus mostly on the unique aspects of their own experience," the authors conclude.

Schieffer ends final debate with advice: go vote

NEW YORK (AP) ? Bob Schieffer took a light hand Monday as moderator of the final presidential debate, ending with advice from his mother: "Go vote. It makes you feel big and strong."

Schieffer generally kept his questions to President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney direct, touching on the Middle East, China, the war in Afghanistan and the threat of a nuclear Iran in a debate scheduled to focus on international issues.

At one point he told the two men, "Let me get back to foreign policy" when the subject veered into a squabble on education reform, cutting Romney off as he tried to prolong the topic.

It was the third presidential debate, with PBS' Jim Lehrer and CNN's Candy Crowley moderating the first two. ABC's Martha Raddatz was in control of the debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Republican Paul Ryan. With social media allowing millions of viewers an instant opportunity to be critics, the role of moderator was heavily scrutinized.

Schieffer, the host of CBS's "Face the Nation," gave the two men wide latitude to carry the conversation, even when they tried to talk over one another.

How that played out in the public depended on the taste of the viewer, as seen by two messages that popped up back-to-back on Twitter: "Little known fact. Moderator Bob Schieffer left the room 18 minutes ago," one wag wrote.

But it was followed quickly by another person who thought Schieffer "did a pretty good job of asking mostly decent questions and then getting out of the way. Debate's not about him."

Schieffer's competitor, NBC's "Meet the Press" host David Gregory, tweeted a "tip of the cap" to Schieffer. "Very well done," he said.

Schieffer asked the two men, "What is America's role in the world?" and asked Romney what he felt about the drone strikes that have been the hallmark of Obama's fight against terrorists. He asked whether each candidate would consider an attack on Israel to be an attack on the United States.

When Schieffer asked what each candidate would do if he got a phone call saying Israel was on its way to attack Iran, Romney batted it down as too hypothetical, and Obama didn't address it. Similarly, neither man bit on another hypothetical question of what he would do if Afghanistan forces proved unable to handle the country's security at the time the United States was looking to leave in 2014.

Schieffer segued from another Romney talk about education into the debate's wrap-up statements with a line that quickly drew social media attention: "I think we all love teachers."

Schieffer, who was moderating his third presidential debate, did have one gaffe, referring to the former al-Qaida head as "Obama's bin Laden."

In a sign of his evenhandedness, Schieffer escaped widespread social media criticism suggesting he was leaning any way politically. Earlier Monday, the conservative Media Research Center warned it would be watching him closely, noting it had documented several times when Schieffer supposedly leaned left.

But after the debate, MRC founder Brent Bozell said: "Schieffer managed to moderate this debate without revealing his own positions. Well done."

Formula One racing returns to Texas

by Marcus Moore / WFAA.com

AUSTIN ? Some are saying the upcoming Formula One (or F1) race in Austin will be the equivalent of the Super Bowl.

That's a description that may be hard for many in the U.S. to believe, but F1 enjoys a massive global audience. Some estimates suggest that half a billion people follow F1 worldwide.

Now ? for the first time since 2007 ? Formula One is back in the U.S., bringing along with it the glitz and glamor of what some argue is the pinnacle of motor racing.

Drivers in the most technologically advanced cars on the planet compete at tracks across the globe. In November, the new Circuit of The Americas, southeast of Austin, will play host.

"The day is finally here," said famed racing driver Mario Andretti. "We are rejoicing."

Andretti drove the first official laps during an opening ceremony on Sunday. Speeding down the straightaway in a black-and-gold 1979 Lotus F1 car, he helped add to the spectacle that is F1.

"It's a big motor sports circus," said Barry Mortimer, who works with the Lotus F1 team based in Oxfordshire, England. "Everyone wants to see the awesome technology."

Still, Formula One in the U.S. has a much smaller following, compared to other countries. During the visit to Austin, Mortimer said he and his English team members huddled around a TV and watched the Texas vs. Baylor game on Saturday night.

"F1 needs to be the show that football is," for the sport to reach the same kind of popularity in the U.S., Mortimer said.

November's Texas race is already sold out. Some of the cheapest tickets you'll find are online, but they're still pricey at around $300.

Some sellers are asking thousands of dollars for tickets to the best seats ? all for a sport where few in Texas can name the top drivers, and in which you will find no Americans behind the wheel.

But with a first-of-its-kind track built here in Texas, some believe that could all change. Not only putting Texas on the motor sports map, but making the U.S. once again a stop for that traveling motor sports circus.

New Jersey is expected to host a street race in 2014; Dallas staged an F1 race in 1984.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet Review

Introduction

?

Samsung's Galaxy range of products grows by the day it seems, they have the market wrapped up nicely with its Galaxy S II, S III, Note and Note II smartphones among countless other variants. The tablet market is a little bit different, where they don't really have a market-leading tablet apart from a few nice tries with the Galaxy Tab in various sizes.

?

I reviewed the Galaxy Tab 8.9 a little while ago, and while I was happy with it, it didn't blow me away. I never personally used a Galaxy Tab 10.1, but now I have the pleasure of reviewing Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1.

?

?

Samsung married the smartphone, tablet and threw in some of the PC's kitchen sink when it comes to the Note 10.1. The Note 10.1 gives us split-screen abilities as well as floating applications on the software side of things, and on the hardware side of things we have a quad-core processor, 10.1-inch screen and the S-Pen.

?

Samsung showed the Galaxy Note 10.1 off earlier in the year at Mobile World Congress in an unfinished state. They used the event to see how the public would react to it, and then went back and tweaked a bunch of the tablet to help it blast onto the market.

?

At MWC, the Note 10.1 didn't sport an S-Pen - why they did this and called it a Note 10.1, I truly have no idea. At the time it didn't have much of the software we see on it today, the quad-core processor, or extra storage options. One would look at this and think there's no way Samsung can fail - the Note is a great phone, the Galaxy range of products is doing well, but there are issues with the Note 10.1.

?

Samsung really concentrated on wanting to impress on paper, but do they impress when this device is in your hands? You'll want to read on to find out.

?

?

Specifications, Pricing and Availability

?

Specifications are something that Samsung really took care of with the Galaxy Note 10.1. Samsung opted for its Exynos quad-core processor clocking in at 1.4GHz - somewhat of the gem in the Note 10.1 tablet. Filling it out we find 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (with 32GB and 64GB options) as well as expandable storage through a microSD card slot.

?

?

The display itself being a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x800, 7000mAh non-removable battery, an 8-megapixel rear-camera, and 1.9-megapixel front-shooting camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Samsung's TouchWiz UI on top, a pressure sensitive pen (S-Pen) and Wacom Digitizer.

?

All of this comes in a tablet that weighs just 597 grams (Wi-Fi) model, and the 3G model adds just 3 grams more to fill it out at 600 grams. Included with the Note 10.1 is an IR blaster, USB 2.0 host support and some great front-facing stereo speakers.

?

As you can see, the Note 10.1 is specced unbelievably well for a tablet - a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and the S-Pen make it one of the ultimate note-taking tablets on the market.

?

Price-wise, it is priced quite competitively given its internal strength, with Newegg selling the Galaxy Note 10.1 Wi-Fi-only model for just $499.99, the 3G model ramps the price up quite a bit to $719.99. At that price, it's simply ridiculous and I don't recommend it. If you are the type of person looking to buy the Note 10.1, you've most likely got a capable smartphone that you could tether to the Note 10.1 as a modem - do this instead of paying too much for the 3G model.

5 Reasons Why Do-it-Yourself Marketing Can Actually Hurt Your ...

Entrepreneurs, by nature, are do-it-yourself people. Not a bad thing. While that trait may serve you in many areas there?s one where it actually works against you: Marketing. Here?s five reasons why.

1)?? You Don?t Know What You Don?t Know.

While you might feel savvy after reading a couple marketing books or listening to a savvy marketing guru, it doesn?t compare to working with a qualified team or consultant with great experience and a great record. You simply don?t know what you don?t know, and if you do it yourself, what you don?t know will hurt you. Like having a tag-line that makes no sense, or sends a wrong message. Like pouring money into SEO or your website when the better focus is Content Marketing and improved organic search. Like not realizing you need video. Or having a self-produced video that?s so unprofessional it works against you. The list goes on.

2)?? A Business Owner Can?t Be Objective.

Passionate business owners tend to be absorbed by their business?an advantage when it comes to DIY marketing, right? Not really. Effective marketing starts with an unbiased perspective. To be successful at marketing, business blemishes must be seen clearly. As a business owner you just don?t have that objectivity. If you read Ken Segall?s book Insanely Simple, about his working with Apple, you?ll read how Steve Jobs was proven wrong time and time again by his more objective and talented outside team who created some of the most iconic and successful marketing ever done.

3)?? The Best Marketing Isn?t About A System or Formula.

As more small business owners attempt to save money by trying to do their own thing, more self-proclaimed marketing gurus are popping up on the Internet with their ?Amazing Profit-Making Marketing? systems. They all sound amazing and they all claim amazing results. They even have amazing testimonials. But every business is different, and a cookie-cutter, systematic approach is not the most effective way to market a business or product. While an ?Amazing Profit-Making Marketing System? sounds amazing, the ones making the most money from them are usually the ones getting you to spend money on them.

4)?? Great Marketing Requires Talent.

Great marketing is part science, part art. Yet, the creative part often gets lost or diminished in this ever-advancing tech world. Focused, creative talent is the ingredient that helps communicate your message and persuade your prospects to buy. It?s not easy to find, but if you do it?ll make a huge difference.

5)?? DIY? Doesn?t Really Save Money.

Because you?re not spending money on outside resources you might think you?re saving tons of money with a DIY approach. Just remember this?it?s not just what you spend, it?s what you spend and get back on what you spend.

Great marketing will get you back more, and sometimes significantly more, than what you spend. So, how do you get great marketing? You find and hire great marketing people, like Steve Jobs did, like Nike?s Phil Knight did, and like every successful business owner does. And, they didn?t just do it when they were big successful companies with huge marketing budgets. They did it from the very beginning of their companies, only months after they incorporated.

You also have to factor in what your time is worth. It?s not cheap. If you kept track of every minute you spent trying to do it yourself and applied a dollar value to that, you?d be surprised at the expense. Also realize that every expensive minute you spend fumbling with something you don?t do great is taking away valuable time and talent from something you do do great. That?s another expense.

To sum up I?ll end with a simple quote from someone who?s interviewed hundreds of small business owners and knows what it takes to be successful:

?Business success is all about finding the right outside service providers and using them wisely. You can?t do it all yourself.?

Federal agency to switch to iPhone, drop BlackBerry

(Reuters) - The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) said it will end its contract with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd in favor of Apple Inc's iPhone, dealing a new blow to RIM just months before it launches a vital new device.

The agency said in a solicitation document posted last week that it intends to buy iPhones for more than 17,600 employees - a purchase worth $2.1 million.

The agency said it has relied on RIM for eight years, but the company "can no longer meet the mobile technology needs of the agency."

It also said it analyzed Apple's iOS-based devices and Google Inc's Android operating system and concluded that, for the near term, Apple's iPhone services offer the best technology for the agency because of Apple's tight controls of the hardware platform and operating system.

The agency said the iPhone will be used by a "variety of agency personnel, including, but not limited to, Homeland Security Investigations, Enforcement and Removal Operations and Office of the Principal Legal Advisor employees.

"The iPhone services will allow these individuals to leverage reliable, mobile technology on a secure and manageable platform in furtherance of the agency's mission."

Last week, consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton said it was dropping BlackBerry and switching to iPhone and Android smartphones for its staff of around 25,000.

Analysts said that other businesses and agencies are likely to follow suit especially in light of demand for other smartphones.

"You're going to see this happen more and more," said Ed Snyder, an analyst at Charter Equity Research.

"They still have excellent security ... but if your handsets are a brick that no one wants to use it's going to drag down your business."

RIM has high hopes that its new BB10 smartphone, expected to in early 2013, will compete with iPhones and Android phones. The BB10 will come equipped with a revamped operating system and is aimed at putting an end to a precipitous decline in RIM's market share over the past year and longer.

"Of course, we are disappointed by this decision," RIM vice president of government solutions Paul Lucier said in an emailed statement. "We are working hard to make our new mobile computing platform, BlackBerry 10, meets the future needs of government customers."

RIM said that, after accounting for the ICE move, it had one million government customers in North America.

RIM's advantage has been what industry experts widely describe as superior security and device-management features that have made the BlackBerry appealing to corporate IT managers and a crucial tool for police, government and military use.

But that advantage is waning with the growing number of providers that help companies beef up security on iPhones and Androids and with Apple working on better security on its devices.

"Apple is really addressing security," Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said, adding that it had improved security with the acquisition of AuthenTec and that it now supports Cisco's VPN.

Wu said RIM's problems were compounded by questions over the company's economic viability.

"Is the company going to be around in the next couple of years?" Wu said.

In addition, he added that "a lot of these enterprises have moved beyond email and voice, on to apps and, with RIM, it's pretty clear that their app ecosystem is very weak."

Dining Out W/ Babies: Advice for Waitstaff | W.T.Fatherhood Blog

Home ? General ? Dining Out W/ Babies: Advice for Waitstaff

Message to all waiters and waitresses:? When you see a family sit at one of your tables who has a baby, toddler, infant, young child, thing you don?t think you want for at least another ten years? if you?re first thought isn?t, ?Let?s get some food out to that little person ASAP!?, you are leaving money on the table.? Not just from the people that are at the table with the kid, but most likely from everyone else in your area as well.? Whatever resentment you have towards kids or the parents of kids who bring there kids, go ahead and? bury it for a few moments and serve this family as needed.

Here?s the deal.? If the family sits down, points to a little child and says something like, ?can we get an order in for her first, (a little daughter for the sake of this example) she?s getting hungry.?.. what they are really saying is,? put some food in front of her before she has a total fucking meltdown and ruins everyone?s evening, including YOU and your damn tip jar.?? That?s what we?re saying as dining out parents of children.? With your compliance will most certainly come some reward.? If it?s me.. I mean if my wife and child make it through a meal out happy, nothing crazy here.. I?m talking like 45 minutes to an hour, like 7 beers worth of time.. without crying, then I will make it rain on the service staff that took care of us.? Promise.

Conversely, if you forget the simple task of putting something in front of the child quickly, there is a good chance the parents will be bickering with each other too much to think about your 20% tip, and there is also a good chance the kid will ruin the room?s other diners experiences as well.? It?s not hard.? You don?t even have to get the order right.? Just put something edible in front of the toddler.? You would rather serve an angry vegan a tenderloin then take your chances with the baby in your section.? Trust me.

More advice.? You don?t need to talk about, or prove with actions, how ?great with kids you are?, or how many siblings or cousins you have dealt with.? Funny faces, disappearing quarters etc. -save it.? Just get the food out quickly for this ticking time bomb of a family.? If we wanted silly noises and sounds to entertain our baby, we would have went to the circus or a Gallagher comedy show.? We?re here to eat and act like our lives are intact from what we had before the baby.? Make it happen!

Final bit of advice to really drive that tip-earning service home.? GET THE FUCKING BILL OUT quickly.? Nothing worse then getting through a meal with the child in good spirits only to watch her condition deteriorate as you wait 20 minutes for the check drop.? BRING IT.? It?s the last thing we remember when we?re signing over some cash to you.

New details on new Macs rumored for Oct. 23 Apple event

New details on new Macs rumored for Oct. 23 Apple event

Apple is reportedly holding an iPad mini event on Tuesday, October 23, and iMore has heard for a while that new Macs would likely be along for the ride. A 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is one of the most likely things we'll see, and Mark Gurman from 9to5Mac has some details:

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro will be sold in two configurations, with differing processors and storage, and will be available for purchase soon after introduction.

As mentioned before, the 13-inch MacBook Pro will probably require a discreet GPU to handle Retina duties, something that makes Retina challenging for smaller machines, but has a small enough screen not to make panel pricing or yield impractical. In other words, it's the next logical candidate and should basically look like a smaller, more compact version of the current 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro.

New Mac minis and new iMacs should also make an appearance. WeiPhone.com posted some interesting possible details about those this weekend. (Google translated).

the the new imac design has epoch-making significance. The innovations include: the side from the side almost can not see the imac's thickness, similar to water droplets curved design tetragonal type than it is now almost completely different. Process, the screen the special glue "sticky" on the panel in front with a special glass attached to the surface, very beautiful. Narrow design, but the bottom of the front is still wide-brimmed design. The bracket made some changes. Stronger performance, the price will be more expensive than the current imac. The first release of the 21-inch product, the follow-up to re-introduce the 27-inch.

So, take a Retina MacBook Pro-style display, extend the chin down and widen the base as minimally as possible to fit the actual computer components, and... profit.

We should find out more in just over a week.

Texas Rangers hunt Twitter trolls, taxpayers are not amused

1 day

The Texas Rangers flash the baddest badge in the Lone Star State. They're the top cops working the biggest crimes beneath iconic white cowboy hats. They're the bodyguards for the governor.

All of which raises the question: Why are they investigating a Twitter prank poking fun at a small-town city council?

Since at least August, members of the state's 150-man elite police force are getting to the bottom of who's behind parody Twitter accounts lampooning council members in what's arguably the law-and-order headquarters of Texas: Huntsville, home to the nation's busiest execution chamber.

The mock tweeters include one councilman's?mustache?publishing zingers that include, "(Councilman) Keith (Olson) likes to abuse his powers like I like to abuse his face." Another from the handle Laughable Loll cracked, "I shined my head extra special for tonight so the camera would reflect off of it."

Not laughing is the local prosecutor. He says the tweets may run afoul of harassment laws and asked the Rangers to investigate. That's an absurd explanation to one of the tweeters, who called it a waste of taxpayer dollars, and to constitutional experts who say the tweets are a cut-and-dry case of First Amendment rights.

"When I think of the Texas Rangers, I think of people who are committing felonies," said Katie Newman, who says she admitted to creating one of the fake accounts while being interviewed by a Ranger. "It would strike me as odd that a Texas Ranger would be involved in a parody account of council members in little Huntsville, Texas."

A spokesman for the Texas Rangers, in a brief statement responding to questions about why it would look into such tweets, said only that the Rangers work with district attorneys who request assistance.

"The amount of time spent on this inquiry is a matter of hours so far," spokesman Tom Vinger wrote in an email.

It doesn't even warrant that much time, according to some law experts.

David Anderson, a law professor and First Amendment expert at the University of Texas at Austin, said neither prosecutors nor the Rangers have "any business" investigating tweets if the content is simply parody or satire. He said that even a tweet implying that a council member committed domestic abuse ? as one council member claims ? would be a libel matter taken up in a civil lawsuit, not in criminal court.

"It's ridiculous," Anderson said.

Few badges pack more lore than those of the Texas Rangers. They've followed the trail of Bonnie and Clyde, fought the Comanches when Texas still had its sovereignty and snuffed out smugglers during prohibition. Their Wild West legend has inspired characters from the masked "Lone Ranger" to Chuck Norris playing the karate-kicking "Walker, Texas Ranger."

Today, the Rangers have a lower profile as the state's lead criminal investigators. When polygamist leader Warren Jeffs built a massive compound for his followers in West Texas, the Rangers were the ones knocking on the doors in the middle of the night in a raid that produced widespread allegations of sexual abuse. A highly secretive "Ranger Recon" team patrols the border with the stated purpose of keeping drugs and cartel violence from Mexico at bay.

Walker County District Attorney David Weeks said asking the Rangers to investigate the tweets was appropriate.

"In looking at it, it's more the idea that you have someone totally uninvolved looking at an issue that may have political ramifications," Weeks said. "I try to err on the side of caution in those cases."

Twitter is swarming with the fake doppelgangers of celebrities and politicians. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel still has fewer followers than a well-known parody account that stopped tweeting a year ago, while Not Bill Walton exaggerates the eccentricities of the former basketball star to an audience of 125,000 followers. The tone of fake accounts range from gentle caricatures to the mean-spirited.

The mock accounts in Huntsville sprang up last year and most have only a few dozen followers. Newman, who unsuccessfully ran for a council seat last year, said a Ranger in August interviewed her for more than an hour at his office in Huntsville. She said the Ranger hinted at laws surrounding false impersonations but never cited any specific statute.

Newman said she felt kind of bullied into confessing to being behind one of the accounts.

"One of the things he said is, 'What if we have proof from a council member that you did their account?'" she said.

Newman said she hasn't heard from the Rangers since that meeting. She insisted she didn't know who is behind the other parodies.

"I personally think the Texas Rangers have bigger and better crimes to fight," she said.
